Fire Prevention Week is October 6th-12th

Did you know this week is Fire Prevention Week? This is some information from Aptos Fire.

Fire Prevention Week is October 6th-12th

Fire Prevention Week, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire (the 2-day blaze that killed more than 250 people and left 100,000 more homeless in 1871), has become a successful annual campaign to raise awareness of the importance of fire safety education. The theme for 2013, “Prevent Kitchen Fires", focuses on safety while cooking. In 2011 alone, fires from cooking resulted in 470 deaths, 5,390 injuries and $1 billion in property damage! Many of these tragedies could’ve been avoided by taking simple precautions, such as:

  • Always stay in the home and check food regularly when cooking/baking. Turn off the stove during stovetop cooking, if you leave the room for even a short time.
  • Use a timer to remind you to check the cooking/baking.
  • Wear short, tight-fitting or tightly-rolled sleeves when cooking (no loose/flowing sleeves). If your clothes do catch fire, stop drop and roll over to extinguish the fire, and get medical help.
  • Maintain a kid and pet free zone – keep them at least 3 feet away from the stove when cooking.
  • Use back burners and turn pot handles away from the stove edge, to keep hot things further away from youngsters.

Annual Open House – October 13th

Our annual Open House will be held on Sunday, October 13th, at Station 1 – 6934 Soquel Drive, from 11 AM – 3 PM. Bring the kids by, and see live firefighter demonstrations (including the “Jaws of Life” extrication demo), enjoy some free refreshments, tour the inside of a fire engine or ambulance, meet with Red Cross, Law Enforcement, Lifeguards, 911 Dispatchers and other public safety providers and get valuable information about keeping your home and family safe. Fun Jr. Firefighter activities and a bounce house are available for our youngest visitors, and as always, admission is free for everyone. Hope to see you there!
